Concrete Cancer/Spalling

Concrete cancer, also known as ‘spalling’ is the degeneration of concrete. It is caused by the rusting of the steel that reinforces the concrete. Concrete cancer can occur for a number of reasons including:

  • Weather
  • Salt from living in coastal areas
  • Carbonation
  • Moisture

As the steel rusts, it swells and pushes on the surrounding concrete which causes it to break away or crack.  Wondering how we diagnose that the cause is concrete cancer? Some of the symptoms include external rust stains and the concrete is broken/coming away in places.

While it might sound like an expensive repair  job – it doesn’t need to be. If left untreated, it will worsen, spread further and will cause structural problems. However if treated early on, the problem can be contained and thorough repairs will mean no further concrete cancer.
